Bosch Spin-Off Bites the Dust: Amazon MGM Pulls the Plug

img

It seems that the universe of Bosch is about to get a little less crowded. Just when you thought you could count on a spin-off starring Jamie Hector as Jerry Edgar—Harry Bosch's right-hand man—news broke that we’ll only be graced with one spin-off after all. Yes, folks, you heard it right. Deadline dropped the bombshell that the Jerry Edgar project, which had been simmering like a complicated relationship on the back burner since February 2023, has decided to skip town and head straight to the great television graveyard.

This promising jaunt into the Miami underbelly was supposed to dive into Edgar’s new life post-FBI undercover mission, juggling all the glamour of Little Haiti while evading the ghosts of his past. Think Miami Vice meets Therapy 101—what could go wrong? Well, apparently not a lot; just a small hiccup, you see, when the scripter Larry Andries found himself in a bit of hot water, charged with some pretty serious felonies. Oops! Why do real-life dramas always seem to overshadow the on-screen ones?

But don’t dust off the popcorn just yet, because we do still have the Renee Ballard spin-off to look forward to—aptly named just that: Ballard. Set to arrive (hopefully) sometime in late 2025, this series will showcase the ever-fabulous Maggie Q taking the helm as the lead detective in charge of LAPD’s new, and might I add remarkably underfunded, cold case division. In a world where detective work is often romanticized, one can’t help but wonder if she’ll need a magic wand to solve these icy cases.

Joining her on this icy quest for justice is a colorful cast, including John Carroll Lynch and Amy Hill—because what’s a cold case division without a hint of *celebrity bingo*? It's as if they threw in everyone from your favorite shows to ensure that when fans tune in, they’ll say, “I know that face!” It's like your last family reunion, where you sort of remember everyone’s name, but mostly you’re just there for the potato salad.

In a delightful twist, Titus Welliver, the ever-charismatic Bosch himself, hinted at some intriguing dynamics during his chat with Collider. He mentioned that the Ballard character would make her debut in the grand finale of Legacy. As if suggesting a delightful superhero mash-up, he quipped, “You can’t do Robin without Batman,” but let’s be real—Maggie Q probably wouldn’t transfer a single cape or mask to him. Trust me; she’d much rather handle her own superpowers.

So, as we watch the first spin-off slip through our fingers like sand on a Miami beach, let’s not lose our enthusiasm just yet. Ballard may be coming to save the day—or at least serve us a cocktail of cold cases and dry humor. And honestly, who doesn't love a good mystery mixed with a side of sarcasm?
