The recent health alert from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded to include several new cinnamon products that may contain elevated levels of lead, raising concerns for consumers, especially those with children. Just this past Tuesday, the FDA identified lead levels that exceed acceptable limits in additional brands of cinnamon.
Among the newly affected brands are Compania Indillor Orientale, ALB Flavor, Shahzada, Spice Class, and La Frontera. Additionally, other brands that were previously flagged in the March announcement, including El Chilar, Marcum, SWAD, and Supreme Tradition, have also been added to the alert. These products were primarily distributed through discount retailers such as Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, and Save A Lot.
This alert follows an alarming recall in October 2023, which involved cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products that contained lead. This issue has since been linked to a significant number of lead and chromium poisoning cases, totaling 468 across 44 states. As a response to these discoveries, the FDA has initiated further testing of ground cinnamon products from discount retailers to ensure consumer safety.
The results revealed that ground cinnamon products from multiple distributors exhibited elevated lead levels ranging from 2.03 to 3.4 parts per million (ppm). Here’s a list of the affected cinnamon products:
