Curse-Free Year Ahead: BBC's Precautionary Measures Ensure a Safe 2023

The infamous "Strictly Come Dancing" curse appears to be taking a backseat this year, thanks to a significant new measure implemented by the BBC. Following some dramatic events over the past few months, including actress Amanda Abbington's allegations of bullying against dancer Giovanni Pernice—claims that Giovanni has firmly denied—the BBC has decided to make a substantial change to the beloved show. They have announced the introduction of chaperones in every rehearsal room, ensuring the safety and welfare of all individuals involved in the program.
While many view this change as a necessary step in light of the recent allegations involving certain professional dancers, brand expert Nick Ede weighed in with his perspective. He suggested that the presence of chaperones may have a dampening effect on any potential romantic connections that have become synonymous with the show. In his remarks ahead of the new series, Ede explained, “I think the chaperone thing is going to really be a block to some budding romances. I don't think we'll see as much passion, because obviously there's somebody there.” He emphasized the importance of chemistry and intimacy, which are frequently discussed by the judges.
“One of the biggest draws of Strictly is watching celebrities from shows we adore dance with talented performers,” he added. “Their chemistry is what truly ignites our interest.” Over the years, the series has been tangled in rumors of a "curse" after numerous contestants found themselves romantically linked to their dance partners.
Take, for example, the notorious moment in 2018 when comedian Seann Walsh shared a passionate kiss with dancer Katya Jones. This rendezvous made headlines and led to Seann's breakup with his girlfriend, and Katya's subsequent divorce from pro dancer Neil Jones. The history of celebrity romance on the show doesn’t stop there—newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky and dancer Brendan Cole were also caught up in similar speculation. Their undeniable chemistry during the very first series in 2004 led to public intrigue, despite both of them denying a romantic connection. Unfortunately, the rumors contributed to the unraveling of Brendan's engagement to fellow professional dancer Camilla Dallerup.
