Eco-Warriors' Budget-Friendly Adventure: 27 Countries Without Flying

Two adventurous friends, Tommaso Farina and Adrian Lafuente, have taken on a remarkable challenge: a year-long quest across 27 countries without ever stepping foot on an airplane, all while keeping their budget to a mere £5,900 each. These sustainable explorers, both in their mid-twenties, are on a mission to travel the globe and minimize their environmental footprint.
Rejecting the significant carbon emissions tied to air travel, Tommaso and Adrian have embraced a more eco-friendly method: they’ve opted for boats. They’ve hitchhiked their way across oceans and continents, relying on the kindness of strangers for car lifts or even sets of legs to hike. Their incredible journey has already spanned an astonishing 463 days, taking them through a variety of landscapes in Europe and South America and even across the vast Atlantic—all without a single flight.
As cost-conscious travelers, they've managed to keep their collective expenses at just £11,800 while exploring 27 countries. "We've spent the last year touring without using planes. We consider ourselves 'boat hitchhikers'," Tommaso shared in an interview. Understandably, their loved ones were a bit worried when they first embarked on this journey, especially since they opted to cross the Atlantic on a sailing boat, despite their lack of experience.
"We even sailed across the Pacific on a monohaul boat," Tommaso recalled, describing one of their numerous nautical adventures. Their remarkable journey included connecting with a boat captain on Facebook who offered them a ride, letting them realize their dream of traveling with minimal environmental impact. "Our aim is to inspire hope for a world where humans live harmoniously alongside nature, animals, and other people," he added.
The two adventurers hail from Italy and Spain and share their experiences online through 'Project Kune,' showcasing the feasibility of travel without flights. Before they set off in 2023, they stocked up on fresh and canned food for 60 days at sea, spending just over £900 ($1,200). Up until now, they've only hitched rides on two boats: one across the Atlantic and one across the Pacific. However, their adventures
