Emmys' In Memoriam Snub Sparks Outrage: Shelley Duvall's Absence Condemned

The decision to exclude Shelly Duvall from this year's In Memoriam segment at the 76th Emmy Awards has sparked significant backlash. The beloved actress, renowned for her collaborations with iconic filmmakers like Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, was notably absent from the tribute honoring those who passed away, following her death on July 11.
While Duvall may be celebrated for her remarkable film work, she also made significant contributions to television. Over her extensive career, she not only acted but also created and produced several adored shows such as Faerie Tale Theatre and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories. Her excellence in the industry was recognized with two Emmy nominations: one for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less) for Bedtime Stories in 1992 and another for Outstanding Children's Program for Tall Tales & Legends in 1988.
During the Emmy ceremony, musician Jelly Roll set the tone for the In Memoriam segment by emphasizing the healing power of music and storytelling. “I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal,” he shared with the audience. Before he performed his heartfelt hit, "I Am Not Okay," he encouraged those mourning to acknowledge their feelings of loss, saying, “If you are feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know it’s okay to not always be okay.”
Although many beloved figures, including Shannen Doherty, Chance Perdomo, and Martin Mull, were remembered, the absence of Duvall's name ignited outrage among fans. Social media erupted, with viewers voicing their frustration on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. One user expressed disbelief: “Did they seriously just leave Shelly Duvall out of the Emmys In Memoriam segment? She spent years acting and producing several TV projects... #emmys #shelleyduvall.”
