Erica Durance's Dream DCU Role: A Mother's Strength

Ah, Erica Durance! The name alone conjures images of bustling Metropolis and a certain Lois Lane who wouldn't let a little thing like a speeding bullet get in the way of a great story. Now, it seems she's ready to dip her toes back into the thrilling waters of the DC Universe, and let me tell you, the anticipation is palpable.
In a recent tête-à-tête with Screen Rant, Durance spilled the beans on what it would take to lure her back into the superhero fold that James Gunn is ambitiously trying to weave together. Spoiler alert: she’s in. “Of course I would! It's a fun, fun world to be in this superhero/fantasy/sci-fi-mishmash,” she exclaimed. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that delightful blend of capes, masks, and, let’s not forget, the occasional awkward romantic tension.
But wait, it’s not just about donning a cape and flying around saving the world. Durance has a vision. She mentioned wanting a role that encapsulates a little bit of everything. “I would want something that had aspects of all different kinds of things going on,” she elaborated, proving once again that Lois Lane wouldn’t be caught dead in a one-dimensional storyline. Is there a superhero version of a literary buffet? If so, she’s definitely craving some variety.
Durance skyrocketed to our hearts as Lois Lane in Smallville, first gracing our screens in the Season 4 premiere called “Crusade” back in 2004. Initially only meant for a four-episode arc—because apparently nobody consulted her or the viewers who loved her—she ended up sticking around until the series bowed out in 2011, proving that sometimes fans know best. And what about that sweet moment in the Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, where she and former co-star Tom Welling (ever-so-charming as Clark Kent) shared a glimpse into their domestic bliss with two daughters on the idyllic Kent farm? Talk about adulting goals!
But it doesn’t end there. Durance also flexed her acting chops as Alura Zor-El in Supergirl. Because why not be both a mother to Superman and the mother of Supergirl? There’s an art to juggling identities that only a superhero could master—much like juggles on the stage of life!
And here’s the kicker: Durance is just as excited about the prospect of returning to her animated roots. She’s ready to revive Lois Lane for an animated Smallville, a project being whipped up by her former co-stars, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor). Durance expressed a keen interest in exploring Lois’s past, saying she would love to delve into how her career progressed, how she learned to balance being a mother, and the rich tapestry of her upbringing. Can we get a collective sigh of empathy for this multi-layered character who has been through so much already?
Now, with the DCU kicking off on December 5 with Creature Commandos, which puts Viola Davis's Amanda Waller in charge of a motley crew not unlike our beloved Suicide Squad, it’s clear that the stage is set for more facepalms and laughter as heroes (and anti-heroes) navigate life’s little absurdities.
And speaking of absurdities, keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming Superman reboot and Peacemaker Season 2 slated for 2025, along with some spicy new tales about our favorite Green Lanterns. It appears Durance's current journey is just the appetizer for a full-course meal of heroics, humor, and heart.
So, here’s to Erica Durance—still kicking it as Lois Lane, ready to embrace whatever peculiar challenges the DC Universe throws her way. Because if she’s anything like the character she plays, she’s not one to shy away from an adventure.
