Model to Marvel: Uncover the Stars Who Switched Runways for the Silver Screen

Welcome back to another delightful edition of Soompi & Viki Staff Talk! Today, our staff members are sharing their thoughts on a subject that's near and dear to the hearts of all K-drama fans: the fabulous world of models-turned-actors. It’s a tale as old as time, or at least as old as the transition from strutting down runways to captivating audiences on the small screen. So, grab your favorite snack and settle in as we share our picks.
First up on our rolodex of talent is the ever-charming Lee Sung Kyung. This woman has made a distinct mark on our hearts with her incredible ability to morph from a bubbly weightlifter in “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” to a fiercely competitive doctor in “Doctors.” Her knack for stepping into diverse roles is nothing short of mesmerizing. One moment, she’s Oh So Nyeo with all her quirky antics, and the next, she’s the confident surgeon Cha Eun Jae in “Dr. Romantic 2.” It’s as if she has a secret stash of acting superpowers tucked away! As a devoted K-drama aficionado, I can confidently say Lee Sung Kyung is an actress whose performances warrant a standing ovation—or at the very least, a re-watch.
Now, let’s talk about Ahn Bo Hyun, the man who has gone from military prosecutor to romantic heartthrob faster than you can say “drama marathon.” Once I laid my eyes on him in “Military Prosecutor Doberman,” I was hooked. His portrayal of a military prosecutor dealing with corruption was intense yet relatable. And then, he effortlessly charmed us all in “Yumi’s Cells” with a surprise romantic twist. One minute, he’s the epitome of toughness; the next, he’s a warm-hearted sweetheart. Talk about versatility! I can hardly wait to see where his acting journey takes him next.
And how can we forget Hwang In Youp? If second lead syndrome had a face, it would definitely be his. After watching him in “True Beauty” as the brooding Han Seo Jun, I found myself grinning like a lovesick puppy at his ability to balance bad-boy charm with heartwarming sincerity. He’s not just a pretty face; he’s got the acting chops to prove it. With leading roles in “Why Her?” and “The Sound of Magic,” it’s clear this man is just getting started. My popcorn is ready for his upcoming transformation in “Family by Choice”!
Next on my list is the dashing Byeon Woo Seok, a true contender in the realm of model-turned-actor. He made waves in “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency,” but it’s in “Lovely Runner” where he truly unlocked his potential and, dare I say, stole my heart. His portrayal of Ryu Sun Jae had me glued to the screen. Between shocking plot twists and his stirring performance, it’s impossible not to fall under his charming spell. Who could resist a love story wrapped in drama and intrigue?
Then there’s the iconic Gong Hyo Jin, who, unbeknownst to many, started her illustrious career as a model. With a filmography that reads like a K-drama hall of fame, she’s graced the lead role in 13 dramas—all of which exceeded nationwide ratings of 10 percent. Can we agree that she’s the queen of K-dramas? From “Master’s Sun” to “It’s Okay, That’s Love,” she is a certified hitmaker. It’s hard not to be in awe of her enduring success.
Lastly, we have Lee Jong Won, my personal favorite among the fresh faces. This actor has been steadily building his career with roles in “Knight Flower” and most recently “Bad Memory Eraser.” His impressive range allows him to switch from a dashing tennis player to a gentle knight with ease. I’m practically bubbling over with excitement to see what else he has up his sleeve in future dramas and possibly films. The sky's the limit!
