Unbreakable Bonds: Jaylen Barron Explores Shayanna Jenkins' Loyalty Amidst Aaron Hernandez's Murder Trial

img

This story contains spoilers from the ninth episode of the FX limited series *American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez*, titled *What’s Left Behind.* And let’s just say, with a title like that, you know it’s not going to be a cozy night in with your favorite rom-com. More like an emotional walk through the sands of a shifting desert, with the wind howling questions that no one seems to have the answers to.

By the ninth episode, Hernandez (played by Josh Rivera) has drifted so far into the storm that his home feels more like a shipwreck. Following the shocking events of Odin Lloyd's murder laid bare in episode eight, our not-so-heroic hero is caught in a desperate tango with the truth and those pesky police who come knocking at his door late at night, the way bad news always does. There’s no charming way around it—waving them off like an obnoxious door-to-door salesman is a temporary fix at best.

As the credits roll, we find Hernandez’s fiancée, Shayanna “Shay” Jenkins, faced with a fierce tug-of-war between the man she believes in and her sister Shaneah, who is drowning her sorrows on the couch, fresh from dealing with the loss of her own partner. Can we say awkward family reunions just reached a whole new level of ‘no, thank you’?

This episode shifts focus squarely onto Shay as her world starts to self-destruct in the most tragic fashion. Imagine coordinating lawyers while trying to sooth a cranky baby, dealing with financial crises after the Patriots sever all ties with Hernandez (goodbye, fortune and fame), ducking paparazzi like they’re ninjas on a mission, and all the while figuring out who in her life is worth trusting—no pressure there, right?

With Shay’s emotional turmoil hovering over the courtroom drama like an ominous cloud, the biggest question looming is: will she choose loyalty to her man or support for her sister? *Spoiler alert: the pressure is on.* Jaylen Barron, who breathes life into Jenkins’ character, succinctly sums it up when she muses, “What a delightful pickle, right?” This is where it gets complicated—because relationships, especially under duress, rarely fit into neat packages.

“I’m not sure there’s a right answer,” Barron remarks as she attempts to peel back the layers of Shay’s intricate web of love and loyalty. “She’s a 22-year-old in the eye of a tornado, and everyone expects her to just know what to do. I can hardly pick my lunch without consulting Google.” Can we blame her? With whispers from both Hernandez's mother compelling her to stand by him and her own family expecting her allegiance, it’s a nuanced mess, if we ever saw one.

It's almost like being handcuffed to a life raft in the middle of a sinking ship, isn’t it? Barron's portrayal of Shay shows a young woman pulled in various directions, much like a piñata at a birthday party, only there’s no candy, just heartbreak. She speaks of her character with a mix of empathy and frustration, noting, “I wanted to add depth to Shay beyond just the label of ‘fiancée’—she’s a whole person with a heart that beats wildly for the man she loves.”

Indeed, Shay's loyalties are multi-faceted. From their origins in Bristol, Connecticut—where they both traversed the clumsy trials of adolescence, to having a child together—it's evident that she simply doesn’t have a straightforward path to follow. “Leaving him just wasn’t an option,” Barron argues, with the kind of insightful wisdom that feels almost maternal. “She loves him and has built a life around him, despite the chaos that surrounds them. You can’t just unlove someone.”

Every decision she makes is a reflection of her upbringing—loyalty runs deep in Shayanna’s veins, and Barron drilled down to that essence. “I might not agree with all her choices, but understanding where they come from is essential. I’ve struggled in relationships, too, and that doesn’t just vanish,” she reveals, resonating with a universal truth shared by many.

And while the public was quick to judge Shay during the trial, Barron feels people often forget that she was merely a young woman trying to make sense of her shattered reality. In her words, “Imagine the toll that infidelity and fear of losing your family takes—the weight can feel unbearable.”

Thus, when we see Jenkins visiting Hernandez in prison with their daughter, it paints a bittersweet portrait of resilience. Taking another step to keep the family intact, she brings birthday cupcakes, only for the reality of prison life to confiscate them—so she and Hernandez fake a joyful celebration with invisible desserts. Because who among us hasn’t had to pretend everything is fine while the world around us crumbles?

There’s a poignant reminder in that moment that love endures, regardless of circumstance. “If she could stand by him while he faced murder charges," Barron asserts with conviction, “what could possibly shake the foundation of their love? Sexual orientation? Hardly a hiccup in the face of that storm.”

As for Barron, she expresses no regrets about diving deep into the turbulent waters that are Shayanna's life. “I left a part of myself in every scene,” she affirms, a statement drenched in both pride and fatigue. Jenkins may not be a household name yet, but Barron believes heart and authenticity will speak louder than tabloids ever can. In the end, it’s less about the headlines and more about understanding the beat of
