West Nile Virus: Should European Travelers Be Concerned?

West Nile Virus: A Threat to Humans

West Nile virus (WNV) is a potentially fatal neurological disease that can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.

WNV is typically spread by mosquitoes, but it can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, organ donations, or pregnancy.

Less than 1% of people who are infected with WNV develop neurological infections, such as meningitis or encephalitis.

However, one in 10 of these cases is fatal.

People over the age of 50 are more likely to get seriously ill from WNV, especially if they have underlying health conditions.

There is no specific treatment for WNV, but supportive care can help to improve the chances of survival.

Preventing WNV infection is important.

You can do this by:

  • Not traveling to affected areas during times when mosquitoes are more common, such as in summer.
  • Reducing your time outdoors when in an affected area.
  • Using mosquito repellent.
  • Covering your arms, legs, and feet.
  • Keeping mosquitoes out of your bedroom at night.

Climate change is causing an uptick in virus outbreaks in Europe, including WNV.

Increased international travel from dengue-endemic countries is also increasing the risk of imported cases and local outbreaks.

Dengue-carrying tiger mosquitoes are now established in 13 European countries.
